IVF and sexism

MPs have given the clearest indication yet that fertility clinics will no longer be able to refuse treatment to single women and lesbians.

So women will be allowed children with no father by virtue of the fact that they can bear the child. Men however are completely denied the chance to bring up a child without a mother.

LORETTA: It’s every man’s right to have babies if he wants them.
REG: But… you can’t have babies.
LORETTA: Don’t you oppress me.
REG: I’m not oppressing you, Stan. You haven’t got a womb! Where’s the foetus going to gestate?! You going to keep it in a box?!”

Monty Python aside, let’s say a woman gives birth to a child right now, and gives that child to a man to raise. The man is unknown to the woman. Social workers would go nuts about it (while ignoring issues involving work elsewhere no doubt) but isn’t it the same thing? Why is it that this act would be investigated to more depth than women getting the sperm without the friction? Because all men are seem as kiddie-fiddlers? Why cannot a man be afforded the same priviledge as a woman with respect to bringing up a child? It’s got nothing to do with anything more than bias and sexism surely? There is no actual basis for refusal.

  1. That’s funny, I ended up here by accident, and I’m just now helping a campaign for the right to keep this (giving sperm to single women and lesbians) legal in Finland. There is a way for a man to get a child from an unknown woman–adoption. And I do think it’s unfair that it’s more difficult for a single man to adopt than for a single woman to adopt, as it is also unfair that men in general are seen as inept with children. My girlfriend’s mother died when she was young, and everyone wanted to have her taken away from her father and be raised elsewhere, because “what’s a grown man going to do alone with a child.” Luckily he was stubborn about it and she got to stay with him–he’s the most fabulous parent I’ve ever met. I think there is a bias against men when it comes to child-rearing, and if I were a man I’d make a much bigger noise about it. Anyway, that’s my 0.02SNTs…
