“More than 100 NHS sites are to be sold off in a bid to help provide housing for key workers”
Many years ago, the old asylums were built. Enoch Powell once famously said “There they stand, isolated, majestic, imperious, brooded over by the gigantic water-tower and chimney combined, rising unmistakable and daunting out of the countryside – the asylums which our forefathers built with such immense solidity to express the notions of their day.”
The key word there is countryside. They were built away from towns and villages, away from ‘normal’ people, away from any risk of damaging society, and that involved land, lots of land. Land that the Health Authority owned.
You may well be aware that in health care, there is a hierarchy among the 3 main branches. Top is General Health, second is Mental Health, third is Learning disabilities. It’s not hard to figure that the users who complain the loudest get the most cash ……. anyway, this inequality of service provision has been known for years, and even before I started my training, the Govt (yes, the Govt) took steps to remedy this. They stated that all properties and land which were allocated for the mentally ill / learning disabled would be ‘ring fenced’ for that branch of health care. In other words, if if was used for a particular area of health, then if it was sold, that money would remain exclusively for that area.
Sounds good. Appears to redress the imbalance.
Until they just changed the rules that is.
Now, money that could be used to improve the daily lives of those with either a MH or LD problem will instead be used to house. No guarantees who gets to live in these new estates is there ? Could be anyone working in the civil service, and you just know that they will be selling off huge houses there to make even more money. And the local services for those that need them ? Pfft …..
What mental health needs right now is another murder or two. Then they would get the money that they NEED.
