Georgina’s site will be looking funky for a while – I’m moving it from where it is into my space so the dns will look odd. Other stuff of mine is also being moved but even I don’t look at it so no-one else can possibly notice it.

The name of this blog
I’ve had a few comments recently about the name of this blog. So here it is. Anyway… this blog started as a WP blog in January 2004 and it was not under it’s present name (I half remember the original)..
In March 2004 there was a UPB munch in Bristol (photographic evidence). On one of the days we were walking through the centre of the city and there was a TV crew of some sort that were talking to people. I’m wandering past and a lady from that crew approached me and said “What makes you happy?” to which my immediate response was “Lithium”. I declined the opportunity to talk on camera. I have no idea just how out of my tree I was around then – I’d stopped drinking the month before – but I won’t have been completely in control. I suppose. My memories of that are vague at best even with the pictures. That question stuck though. I liked it.
So I stuck it on top of my blog.
(If you want to read what makes other people happy, click the link at the top of the sidebar.)
Spammers: Amuse me.
We have a situation:
- You want to leave links to your spammy stuff
- I don’t want you to because you paste the same old garbage
It’s a boring game. So here’s a way out for you – make me laugh. That would take some doing but as I nuke spam really fast what have you got to lose? Make me laugh, make your spam funny, raise your game from annoyance to comedic and I’ll leave the links. Funnier it is, longer it lasts. hell, if it’s that funny I’ll point people at your hilarious comment. Make me laugh :)
Less is More
Seeing as colours have arrived in Real Life, I’ve pulled the rich hues that were here before. I was getting a bit fed up of them anyway. Back to tried and tested variations of grey. I like grey. Not too harsh, not too dark. This will sound like a joke but I actually wanted a really bright blue drop / drops / splash in the header. I found the splash but Paint Shop Pro couldn’t supply me with the blue. It probably can but as with all things graphic I am seriously lacking. Thanks for the image go to Christopher Potter. If the colours look too odd on a CRT let me know please?
Big letters not little
Today is a half-day thanks to a monumental headache and copious amounts of painkillers. Got up, did some work, about threw up so back to bed for hours. Haven’t had a headache like this for ages.
The error logs [L] errors have gone. Must have been me as I removed the .htaccess rules but then the pages did work… odd. Today’s error log is very amusing. Loads of these:
File does not exist: /home/tamba2/public_html/t2/archives/2005/03/09/post-name/trackback
I don’t mean one or two, I don’t mean different IP’s. I means swathes of them, hitting every few seconds all from a few IP’s. The really really funny thing is that these idiots are having a problem with my web address that the first few spammers did – when all the spam started I got none at all while others drowned in the stuff. But then the spammers wised up – and managed to get a capital T there instead.
File does not exist: /home/tamba2/public_html/t2/archives/2005/03/09/
File DOES exist: /home/tamba2/public_html/T2/archives/2005/03/09/
I wonder if I should have just battered the clueless idiots with the cluebat?
And Firefox 2 (aka Bon Echo is looking okay. Spell check is good, close tabs thing is good, better options is good, session restore is good. Blue logo is not (because having FeedDemon, Bon Echo and Thunderbird – still looking for an alternative! – all open means as they are all blue to varying degrees makes the selection that bit slower.
And I just remembered something so I’m off to the FAQ.
Error log strangeness
From the cpanel error log:
File does not exist: /home/t2/public_html/wordpress/[L]
File does not exist: /home/t2/public_html/upgrade/upgrade_es.php
File does not exist: /home/t2/public_html/index.php
All the above exist and all are present.
The .htaccess covering the /wordpress directory:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /wordpress/
RewriteRule ^(.+).html?$ /$1.php [r=301,nc,l]
</IfModule>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(.+\.)?tamba2\.org\.uk/ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteRule .*\.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ [L]
But if that is the cause then why the root 404? I’ve got 15380 404′s being served. A variety of IP addresses. Might be a coincidence but the spammers are knocking on the door a fair amount today.
Why are the above 404 and what’s with the [L] ?
File does not exist: /home/tamba2/public_html/wordpress/style2.css
That HAS moved so someone somewhere is hotlinking again…….
Update:
The error with [L] at the end is coming from here: 83.31.115.10 (Poland) and sometimes at the rate of 4 errors a second it seems. Also here: 83.144.109.104 (Poland), 80.53.228.242 (Poland), 58.241.84.185 (Beijing), 222.185.26.246 (Jiangsu), 60.3.129.126 (Hebei – China), 219.150.158.86 (Guandong) 222.81.149.32 (Xinjiang) and many other IPs. Spammers I assume? What’s with this [L] though?
And this IP was chucking tons of spam at me 81.177.140.237 until it got placed into the .htaccess for a while.
How big is yours?
Website that is :)
I’ve been moving things from ISP space to here, from box.net to here, from this machine up into here so I’m more likely to remember what is where. And when it’s all organised online I’ll download the lot as a backup. (That sound odd? Whatever). Anyway …. space. If you are on Site5 then you have no worries – after all for your $6.95 a month I’m sure your 10 Terabytes of disk space and 30 Yottabytes of data transfer will suffice (they oversell? No, surely not! Tell me it ain’t so!) but a realistic host will set realistic limits. But then inside those limits how much do we actually use?. As I’m asking…..I’ll show mine first. The blog + gallery + wordpress guides + various files here and there is ~130Mb. That’s not a whole lot. The gallery will cause the fastest expansion in the future too.
How big is your site?
New digs
Good: faster, more space, more (rollover) bandwidth – good
Not so hot: no svn, ensim, no new control panel toys
and I don’t seem to have broken anything in the move either – always a bonus.
Relocation.
When this post is no longer here, the move and DNS have completed.
All comments will be lost – the db is already exported.
More images
Seeing as I had put the London images up, and considering that I also needed to add a few of Winston I thought I’d see what else I’d got to upload. A few as it turned out. So there is now 546 images in 13 albums including all the UPB pics I’d got and the Munkeh ones also return. There are a couple of faults with an image or two not displaying when they should but I’ll try and discover what that is later. The Photo Gallery
