Stalingrad. It may well get a good write-up at IMDB. It might even be a good film, it might live up to “Excellent” and “A Masterpiece” on the cover. But this DVD has a HUGE fault similar to ‘Tell No-one”. That one was in French with English subtitles. I really don’t like subtitles for most films but a thriller? It’s still unwatched. But I see Stalingrad, see that good places gave it good reviews so I buy it. And it’s dubbed. If I don’t like subtitles then I really really don’t like dubbed films. It’s like watching something that is not only ever so slightly out of sync but also where the lip movements are different. And the accents are ridiculous. But does it say ‘dubbed’ on the box? Hell no – they want to sell it and they assume, probably rightly, that putting those 6 letters on a box will kill the sales.

Tell No One it's in french
I see a film called Tell No One. I check the sleeve – one heap of praise on the front, two on the back. Blurb is in English, it is created in partnership with among others BBC Four. It says nothing at all about what language it is in. It mentions 1 french actor, 1 american actress. I checked for language, I checked for subtitles. Finding none I assumed it was in English.
But no – it’s in french. If I had know this I would not have bought it regardless of how damn good others thought it to be. Is this some new marketing? To not show what the language is just to force some more sales? According to the DVD language menu it is in fact “unspecified” which makes it worse. So now I cannot even trust a DVD box. That’s just stupid, damn stupid. And the film? It’s heading bin-wards.
A DVD trio
Monster: It was okay. I was familiar with the backstory so it held no surprises. The thing that stopped me really getting into it was the forced downturn of the mouth in Theron’s character. It seemed false throughout. Watch again? No.
blow. I liked Depp in this one (though he was superb as Willy Wonka) and the overall film was good. Similar to Scarface in some ways. What really annoyed me was the last few minutes. We get an imagined meeting with his daughter, we get a line about the fact that he (George Jung) will not be up for release before 2015 and then we get the heart-tugging line that his daughter has never visited him. Who the hell cares? The man was a drug dealer on an epic scale, he ruined countless lives, his actions will have killed many and yet the film-maker wants us to feel sorry for him. It could be taken as just a fact and the daughter’s stance on the actions of her father but in that case it could have been written differently. As it stands it was a film about a really nasty guy and there is selfish sorrow at the end. Who.the.hell.gives.a.damn. Watch again? Possible – I was working at the time.
A Scanner Darkly. Loved it. The film technique was superb, really liked that presentation and the way the film used it. Plot was good and still has me thinking about it and the subplot remains as relevant now as when written. First film I’ve seen with Keanu when I did not think of Bill & Ted. The Downey Jr. character reminded me of Ben Elton many times. Very good film and one to watch – and absorb – again.
And I just today bought “It’s all gone Pete Tong“. I have the right box, the DVD has the right information on but the wrong film has been pressed – I have “Down to the Bone” which might be good – and the lead actress looks attractive and reminds me of someone I would love to see again but probably never will – but it was not the film I wanted. So that goes back tomorrow. In the meantime and because I have work I want to get through, Independence Day is the viewing pleasure. Great film.
About Zoe
I said a week ago that I ‘really enjoyed’ The Wind That Shakes The Barley. I changed my mind. I would now say it’s ‘okay’. Partly this is a result of reflection, and partly because I watched Killing Zoe. Now this I really did enjoy. Great fun from start to finish. It’s not a deep film but it really does keep going. It hasn’t the same stand-offs that are seen in other Tarantino films (Reservoir Dogs and True Romance spring to mind) but it is a very entertaining film. Music is good too. One to watch again.
3 films.
Apt Pupil. I have no idea when I bought this and I have memories of trying to watch it previously. This film is terrible. It is terrible on every single level. There is not a single redeeming feature. Stephen King can write some excellent stories and this one is prior to Misery (where I felt he started to lose his own plot) and few films have done his work justice (Carrie, Shawshank) and others have bombed (Cujo being the star turn there) but Apt Pupil is just plain crap.
The Wind That Shakes The Barley. Bought solely on the strength of the blurb and the Palme D’Or award. Really enjoyed it. I got the plot, the politics. Read the main description of the film (from the Cork newspaper at imdb) and ignore the stupidity contained within. Whoever wrote that used the film to peddle their own nationalistic views and the film doesn’t need that crap attaching to it.
Days of Glory. Again bought because of the whole stack of glowing reviews and stars decorating the front. It was only when it started I realised it was in french with english subtitles. I’ll have missed some speech/text but it was minimal. Excellent film. It just would not have worked in english or dubbed. French film for a french (algerian) market – nothing wrong with that. Film was compelling, no ‘filler’, great to look at. Like The Wind above it too had a political agenda but in this case I actually cared about the characters. Whereas The Wind appeared superficial at times, this did not. It looked dirty, bloody and hard. And as much as I’d like an excuse to really have a pop at the French Govt, what they are doing to the Algerians is no worse that what the UK Govt is doing to the Ghurkas. Days of Glory – excellent.
Films watched again because they are superb: The Departed, Lord of War, Natural Born Killers, True Romance
In the queue: A Scanner Darkly, Babel, Serenity, Killing Zoe
Crash. Awesome. Amazing. Riveting
It takes a lot for me to (1) stop working (2) watch a film and (3) to really be impressed given my cynicism but wow, did Crash do all that for me. Everything about the film was just so damn good, nothing jarred, nothing in it was wasted time, everything counted and it all knitted together into a film that is easily one the best I have ever seen. I know I could have made this discovery at any time in the last three years but damn, it was worth the wait.
1 keeper from 4.

Good film. No sex, no violence, none of the stuff I usually like, but it’s a good film. 3rd Edward Norton in about 3 weeks. I’ve even told Jacq she might like it. It was another 5 quid bargain bucket film and well worth a viewing. imdb
Also watched one called Unknown and this was pretty dire. I’m sure on paper it worked very well. As a book – a short story – it would work well. One of the psychological genre, but conveying that through the screen is hard enough at the best of times. The cover says it’s a cross between Memento and Reservoir Dogs. So that’s a lurcher / mongrel then. One to not be watched again.
Lastly Casino. Not so great. All the usual ‘Mob’ characters in but the mix didn’t do it for me. You think Pesci and De Niro give the Cosa Nostra a cut? After all, without them their roles would be even more limited. It’s just shy of 3 hrs and I thought it rambled.
Oh yes – The Bourne Ultimatum. Didn’t like it as much as 1 and 2. It felt more of an add-on than something in it’s own right. The cover says “Move over 007, Bourne is back”. Well with Daniel Craig now next to M it’s Bourne in the backseat for me. Can anyone fight for as long as he and not break into a sweat? In Man with a Golden Gun there is a scene with 2 japanese girls and Bond fighting off a horde of young martial arts students. That looked ridiculous and Bourne seemed to just fall into that. The ending was really poor.
This week: Crash, 28 Weeks later, Blade Runner (Final version) and if I can, The Good Shepherd.

Deserves the 18 cert. A hard film, more than NBM even. See the words under the red stars in the image? Accurate they are.

Do I look like I give a damn?
Watched Casino Royale last night. Great film. I remember when it came out Gary saying it was a damn good film and I really enjoyed it. Opening sequence was excellent. Lots of running – like it was the mark of a new guy. The airport part was the only – for me – typical bond bit and whereas Connery / Moore would have had the witty remark I preferred the silence. The love interest? Predictable – all part of the “shag’em and shoot’em” routine. It seemed more substantial than previous offerings in the 007 stable and is more than welcome because of it. Very watchable film.
Never to be watched again.
Really? Wasn’t the film I saw. Confusing, dreary, events which had zero bearing on anything else. I’m sure that in there is a message about corruption. And that for some it will make sense. This one missed me by miles.
