Apple. Malware. Get used to it.
American? Watch, understand, do.
Octopress
I really like the default theme. I like that the sidebar can be collapsed, I like the colours but most of all I love the font and font size. It’s as perfect as I’ve seen on any theme anywhere. Octopress.

Google. Out of bandwidth
I am sure Google have bandwidth issues at Youtube. It used to be the case that I could load a video and if it was doing so slowly I could pause it. The loading would continue and I could then watch the whole video. But now when you hit Pause loading completely stops.
Doesn’t seem to matter if you log in to Google or not. Now why would you change this unless you had problems?
Not your hosts file
What’s the point in Apple including a hosts file if Apple software then ignores it?
127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 facebook.com
127.0.0.1 connect.facebook.net
127.0.0.1 facebook.net
127.0.0.1 fbcdn.net
127.0.0.1 www.fbcdn.net
0.0.0.0 badge.facebook.com
0.0.0.0 blog.facebook.com
0.0.0.0 en-gb.facebook.com
Nothing I run should ever load anything from facebook. But no, it’s not my machine, it’s not my OS, it’s not my decision and yes Apple will totally ignore me and load all that crap. Whether you give a damn about my hatred of facebook’s spying the hosts file is an integral part of the system which Apple should not be ignoring. Even if they have got into bed with facebook.
Another really stupid BBC reporter
So Jack Osbourne has a diagnosis of MS and BBC reporters are now instant experts. Says one “With enough courage, determination and support life can go on as normal”.
It’s got nothing to do with ‘courage’ or ‘determination’. It’s a degenerative disease and ‘support’ cannot stop your system decaying.
Dominic Hughes you should be ashamed of yourself.
Theme purchase
Very nearly bought a theme last night. The site has a 30 day money back, you get a heap of themes and it’s only $30. Reason I didn’t? Because if I want to change anything in it I am on my own – no Support. I’m not paying to get annoyed as I can do that for free. You want my money then you offer Support as part of the deal.
The site says “Premium Support for All Themes” but the FAQ says “For customization related questions, we will point you in the right direction or provide direct solutions if its not too time consuming.” I’m not going to be on the end of a judgement about if something is time-consuming or not. If I have paid I want some post-meta (for example) removing I expect the answer. Still, there will be a free theme out there that does the job, I just need to find it.
Polite.
Websites will soon to be forced to identify people who have posted defamatory messages online.
Mr Clarke said the measures would mean an end to “scurrilous rumour and allegation” being posted online without fear of adequate punishment. BBC
Register a domain that Nominet cannot touch and do so at a registrar with privacy controls (Namecheap). Get webspace at a host known to see speech as important (Nearlyfreespeech). Post all you like and get people to link to you.
And the IP address? Go to what must be a real growth business right now and buy a VPN.
Upshot? The person wanting to attack will attack even harder because of the hoops they have to jump through and because they can. They win.
