The power adapter for the laptop is dead and I went looking at the Apple store. A replacement is £58 (!!) and the reviews are terrible for official Apple gear. Do I have any choices here or – as I suspect – does the Apple monopoly have me over the financial barrel?
Is the the actual power brick thats dead or just a borken wire near the connector? Does it work if you wiggle the connector about a bit? The cable on Jaynes broke, and I was able to salvage it by carving the plastic off the plug, cutting the wire back by 6 inches, and soldering the plug back on with some shrink sleeve around it.
It’s the brick. Dead as dead can be – just tried this morning.
Had it been the wire though I have no soldering skills so I would probably have been out of luck there too.
Dont know what model you have, but these sell them for ibook and powerbook for 25 quid. Ive never bought from them though, so cant vouch for them

I think it’ll be a proper job from Apple. Last thing I want to is fry a machine because of a dodgy connection. They do have that market all wrapped up, probably because they are so litigation happy by all accounts. Still, J’s laptops have had similar issues so it’s not isolated, at least not here.
Thanks for the tips :)
what kind of laptop is it?
Sorry for the delay – an MBP. I was hoping for something local because obviously I use it daily and the battery is good but that that good :) I paid the Apple Tax from their store.
Dear EU Monopolies Commission,
I really cannot wait for you to tear into Apple. You thought you had fun with Microsoft – this will be so much more enjoyable.
Damn, if it was an iBook I could have sent you a power supply, don’t have a MB one unfortunately.
