Piercing and the clueless BBC

And here we have the “It’s a slow day so let’s recycle some inaccurate and blatantly wrong junk

Problems over botched body piercings could be a “substantial burden”

Define ‘substantial’. And if you want a ‘burden’ look at tobacco, alcohol, hospital acquired infections to name but 3. In fact if you want the biggest burden it’s medicine for letting people live longer and becoming a burden on the State and Health Services. What about speeding drivers? The Govt could minimise that by taking such an offence seriously because right now they do not. What about sports? That’s voluntary, might need specialist equipment, can be done while drunk, unfit – check the local Accident & Emergency on a Saturday afternoon. If you stay til the evening you can see the drunks who aren’t just a burden but insult and abuse staff. I really don’t think someone who need 50p’s worth of antibiotics is a ‘burden’.

Just over a quarter of people reported complications, including swelling, infection and bleeding.

If those 3 items are deemed complications then surely the number of people should be closer to 100%. I cannot remember a single piece of skin which had no reaction to being punctured by a big needle. And if they are counted as complications then every single invasive procedure must also be counted as having complications. This article implies that if a procedure is carried out in a specialist place by specialist people then all will go beautifully with zero complications. Like that’s true.

Many avoid specialist clinics, and face greater risks piercing themselves, or trusting friends or relatives.

There are specialist clinics? Where? And if you want to talk about greater risks, what about the fact that more and more people are becoming DIY dentists because the Govt does not care to get enough on the NHS.

That whole article is junk, pure dross. Anyone can get any figure and create a scare story about it, anyone can pretend that something mundane is a risk, a complication, a danger. Why does the BBC feel obliged to trot this garbage out every so often? Did an editor’s child get a piercing and they want to Send A Message to Everyone Else?
What the BBC are actually saying is “It may be your body but you should not treat it the way you want”. Since when did we give them permission to dictate to us?

Skin. It’ll wrinkle, go brown, develop moles, get cuts and bruises yet heal perfectly. It has evolved over thousands of years to be as good as it currently is. If someone wants to cut it, get or make holes in it, burn it, hang from it or get it coloured in they should be allowed to do so. Their body, their risk and part of being a society is helping anyone who has taken any risk and become damaged in the result – even the stupid doing things like speeding.

The BBC really should get more of a clue because nonsense like this makes a mockery of the fact their saying they are the best at what they do.

David Davis and 42

So the Shadow Home Secretary resigns because he believes that our judiciary should not have the power to lock someone up for UP TO 42 days. He says it’s a matter of principal etc etc etc and that we should all notice and care about this.
Well I don’t care. Not even the tiniest bit.

The security services determine that someone MIGHT be a threat and they need time to establish that. Every step is still subject to judicial review so where is the problem? They are not saying it WILL be 42 days, just that it MIGHT.

The law and the judicial process determines that someone IS a proven threat to society because they have raped, they have killed, they have abused children but the will of the political parties is such that these people are allowed back out to do it again in too short a time. These are KNOWN threats and the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour. Does David Davis resign because he thinks the will of the people should be listened to? Hell no. Does he care what the people want? No. Is he interested in helping make his party one that looks at issues such as sentencing, prison and making society safer? No.
Well that’s what I care about.

All this guy wanted is his moment in the spotlight, nothing more.
Mr Davis, apart from the bleeding hearts in the “But you have to let him blow people up before you can think he is maybe guilty and even then you can’t discriminate because he feels excluded from our society” in Liberty and those eager to please their political bosses I seriously doubt many people give a damn.

Ask us if we want something useful – like the death penalty.

Found Zen

Me: Seen the large Zen?
No.
It’s the one that can have films in, it’s big.
No, not seen that.
Have you looked in your stuff?
Yes, I’ve looked, it’s not there, you must have lost it.
If you see it can you let me know?
Yes.
– repeat several times over a few weeks.

It was in the place when she keeps her stuff.
I should have realised that when this all started.
When she gets back she’ll deny all knowledge, she didn’t put it there, it wasn’t there yesterday etc etc.

And pretty much just what I’d expect a teenager to say :)

Flowers? I'll pass

A man accused of murdering BBC television presenter Jill Dando left flowers near the place where she was shot, the Old Bailey has heard.

The evidence came as …..BBC

Note to would-be killers – skip the pretty stuff, it’ll only get you into trouble.

Not tactical

Seen/heard on BBC News.

Who did you vote for?
“I voted for Hillary because she is the one I believe in, she was right”
So now Obama has the nomination will you be voting for him?
“No, I’m voting for McCain”

So she just wanted a woman (sexist), or she doesn’t like Obama (racist) or actually believes the current administration’s policies should be continued (terminally stupid). One thing for sure – there will be many like her.

Playing one

So Apple lock the mac down at the firmware level so it can only play a single DVD region. And they do this to get into bed with the film studios. Stupid on many levels. But I have Region 1 DVD’s – right now the uncut Leon (which is infinitely better than the theatrical release) and the first season of the amazingly superb Diagnosis Murder. And I want more from not just R1. So what do I do? I buy a multi-region DVD player produced by Sony. The Sony DVP-NS36 is a cracking machine (little wide maybe). Cheaper from Amazon than ebay too. So why do Sony lock down Apple but make these machines? Because they can probably – that’s lock down Apple because they can.

Quitting Zen

I’ve been with Zen Internet for a number of years now and bar a couple of glitches they have been excellent. They answer the phone fast, they know precisely what they are doing, they talk you through what they want doing from memory not a screen, they take time to explain and they are really good to talk to. Faultless in that respect. They also supply all the alt.* hierarchy in Usenet (bar the really bad stuff) and I know not of another host who will – Google does NOT count. Anyway, as good as they are – and they are the top in all the comparison sites – in the end cost does come into it. They cost me £420 a year with probably another £20 extra for bandwidth overage. I’m moving to O2 and the cost there for one year will be £90. That’s one big saving (my mobile is with them though that was not a reason for the move). It’s the operator closest to Zen, I’ve read decent things about them – and bad stuff too – and the guy at Zen when I got the MAC code agreed he’d heard they were good. I have no idea why Zen have such high prices but given their awards their business must be doing very well indeed. Given that I really do need the line though I hope O2 are as good as billed.

Buy free range eggs dammit

Needed some eggs while shopping. I ignored the own brand stuff as that will come from battery hens and instead selected a box of ‘Respectful’ eggs. It had rolling green hills, sunshine and a wind generator on the box picture. Their hens were ‘green’ because only renewable energy was used and the hens had some sort of ‘dust’ to use. But despite the nice picture, the nice font and all those ‘green’ words it did not specifically say how the hens lived. For all I knew they lived in hole in the ground or a cage they could not turn around in. So I put them back and bought some that did say the hens could wander outside all day. All that advertising for which they undoubtedly put the price up and all to shift their battery eggs. Shame some people will enrich them.
