No invite? Sue you.

Hanni just pointed this out – boy does not invite 2 classmates to his party and is deemed to have violated their rights. That is absolutely stupidly ridiculous – and I can’t wait until some do-goody teacher/socialworker/headline grabber decides to do the same here. (My money is on the lazy do-nothings called Social workers. No-one has yet told what their reason for being is..).

Mind, you wouldn’t want to be online in Sweden anyway. They just passed a very nasty surveillance bill.

Echo from the USA

Finally got my hands on the PS3 demo of Echochrome. Created a US account for a new ID to get it. Also downloaded the PSP version but I can’t use that because the PSP and PS3 already hook up so an error results. But I can’t buy the PS3 game from the US store because I don’t have a US credit card – which means that when Sony release it over here they’ll do a $=£ conversion – it’s going to be 20 quid as a physical product and as GT Prologue was also offered in both forms and was actually cheaper as the case/disc then the download price will not be less (didn’t they – being games producers – say that downloads would be cheaper? Didn’t they say less production costs = big consumer saving? But then the music producers said the same). Anyway, I have the demo to play which is good. I’ll set up a Jap account over the weekend and see what they have on offer.

I do prefer physical media to just downloads though. It’s partly because the purchase seems more real, partly because the manual can be read with the console off, partly because because it looks good with other games and also because if the HD craps out I still have the game. I don’t want to argue with Sony (or anyone) if records do not match or for any other reason. At least with real media if I drop it then I’m to blame. Saying that losing game saves would be bad, really bad. Here’s what would be cool – if I could open the browser on the PS3 to some offsite storage (like DropBox) and then drag my game saves over to it. Wouldn’t that be good? maybe it works anyway – I’ll poke around later. Losing a GT Prologue install would be pretty bad but all the records and progress?

Apparently Tetris on the Sega Megadrive can commend several thousand dollars because there are only around 10 of them – Nintendo won the rights so production etc was stopped. I have a pirate copy I grabbed many years ago which could be worth many times what I paid – but seeing as that was only a couple of quid… I also have Rainbow Islands for the MD (which I got for nothing). There was one on ebay in New condition for 50 quid + postage. The one I have isn’t new but it works – damn fine game too. I have never sold anything on ebay before but these two games I’m tempted to if for no other reason than seeing what they get. I could even throw in some FIFA games, I probably have Altered Beast somewhere. Bargain!

Got $20,000? You could have every Dreamcast game ever – sealed. You could never play them though could you? Bass Fishing with the rod controller was fun though even if you did look daft.

And I’m still playing Valkyrie Profile Lenneth while Crisis Core sits sealed on the games shelf….with so many other games. Too little time..

Safari does not respond

This is why I keep Activity Monitor open all the time. Safari does not respond and needs a Force Quit.

Safari quits, again

This is exactly the same as using Ctrl-Alt-Del on a Windows machine and Ending a process – just needed to say that.. And it happens at the moment at least 3 times every single day. If this were a Windows machine I run checks on it – but you don’t need those on Macs do you? I’ve run Onyx – no improvement. I’ve reset it many times – no improvement. Maybe it’s system rot – so that’s install the OS just to get a stable browser produced by the same company that created the browser? 3 crashes a day is terrible and it affects other process somehow – if not then why after this do I have to close other apps to stop the drive grinding? Less than 6 months and an OS reinstall. Fun.

Leopard and the daily reboot

Open apps: Firefox 3, Safari, Camino, Adium, Smultron, Twitteriffic, Marsedit, Activity Monitor (this always open), Evernote, Shovebox, Skitch, GetDropbox. There may be others, there may be less. It is NOT Spotlight – that is fully off.
Symptom: If I click a dock icon it opens Finder. If I click a link it opens in a new window. The HD grinds. The processor goes to 100% and I end up pressing the power button.
Happens: Daily just about.
Annoyance factor: off the freaking scale. Don’t these thing “Just work”?

So, given the above apps are established (and this happened in FF2) what is the problem? What did I do to break things? It can’t be the machine right?

The only possible thing I do differently to possibly someone else is that I open and close dozens and dozens of tabs in a relatively short space of time. It’s not for fun, it’s work and i’ll be damned if I need to change my work pattern simply because a computer cannot keep up. I lose a stack of work every damn time this happens.
All I can actually do is rearrange open apps so I can constantly see the Ctrl-Alt-Del equivalent the Activity Monitor and see what locks up.

If this was a PC some Mac owners would be having a go at Microsoft……

Squishy skin

2-3 weeks ago my right ankle / achilles area swelled significantly – walking was painful. Couple of very large blisters, lots of weeping from it, took several days to subside. Cause unknown. About 5 days ago the left side of my left hand swelled up (I could not see my knuckles) and began weeping. It is now okay. Woke this morning feeling okay. Head felt ‘wet’ on the left side which I ignored for a while then asked J to take a look. She can see it weeping fairly quickly (as these things go). If I put my left hand – with closed fingers – over that side with my thumb on my ear the swelling extends beyond the covered area. Because I have a shaved head it is really noticeable. I have a large area of squishy skin on my skull. Weird.

Fantasy hours needed

I just got the email saying that Crisis Core – Final Fantasy VII (PSP) has been despatched. As the same time I get another email saying Valkyrie Profile Lennoth (PSP) is on it’s way. Taken with the other Final Fantasy games I need to complete (VIII, IX, X, XI on PS2/3) I have some serious gaming time I should be putting in.
The girls bought me Racedriver GRID for Father’s Day and I’ve played some of it. It’s like Everybody’s Golf, Lumines, WipeOut and others in that you can take 15-30 minutes and have a good game. Short and sweet gaming hits. But not FF. You need an hour or more, several in fact. And that is what I need to build into my days somehow…..

You need gallows

Nurses are to be rated according to the levels of care and empathy they give to patients under government plans. BBC

That’s okay for patients, the hospital and govt targets. But if you are a nurse and want to find the best place to work you need the ratings for black humour. It’s the same for any people-facing job – no humour and you’ll crumble.

What will Google say about your PSP?

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/16/psp-playstation-portable-v400-update/
Google search comes with the next firmware update which makes it absolutely unavoidable. I have never seen the need for Google Desktop but I am aware of what else it does. So let’s say I do use Google on my PSP. When I connect what else will be extracted apart from the browser? What else will it phone elsewhere? Games saves? Amount of memory used? Firmware hacks? Video / Music usage? Google want money which is fair enough but Sony don’t need that money. The market is too small but what they will want is more data on users and this seems an ideal opportunity to peer into a user’s machine without their knowledge. I cannot see that Sony will argue that search will be useful and if it was said to be then why not make it an optional download through the store? Pushing anything 3rd party through firmware is not good.

Saying No to the EU treaty.

The EU Treaty was created by politicians and for politicians. It’s all about power. Power and money.
They apparently all agree that everyone must say Yes to it and when one country sees through it they decide to change the rules because the politicians don’t want to lose their gravy train. They don’t want the corruption exposed, they don’t want people to know they actually do nothing and in the case of France they don’t want others to stop their goal of owning Europe. (France is huge – yet they cannot find the people wanting to come to the UK until they appear at Calais. Why are their fishing boats allowed to blockade legitimate UK boats? Because the Govt doesn’t actually care about the impact here in the UK. They would never allow such a thing on the German or Spanish borders to name but two).

I absolutely oppose any European integration because it’s benefits have yet to be demonstrated. I’m not talking of what has happened previously because that is an entirely different thing – the EU as we have is not what the EU will become – else why the fuss now?
I firmly believe that every country should have a referendum to find what their people want but surprise surprise the politicians do not want this to happen. Why? Because their changes of progressing to the European parliament and all it’s quangos would be sunk. It’s not even that current political views make any difference – the once Labour leader Neil Kinnock and his wife are now happily taking the fat wages that are handed out to do absolutely nothing. If you ever want an example of someone who really has sold out on his roots Neil Kinnock is it.

There is not a single compelling reason to ratify the EU treaty, not one. Everything we are told is not set in stone. They are changing the rules about membership to create the thing so if that goes through why worry about screwing the constituency over again?

Do we want the US of Europe? I think not.

It’s not about the pound, it’s not against the Euro. It’s very much against the politicians. In our village I can give someone the benefit of the doubt at a local election but they are then personally accountable to the people living with them in the village. We are being asked (told) to let “someone” “somewhere” do what “someone” wants them to do. Zero accountability. Nothing.
