From Mars to 2.4

I sleep facing the mouth of the cave. Every room that me and J have slept in I take position between her and the door – or if on holiday between her and any large outside / garden doors. It might be one of those ‘men are from mars’ or manwatching things but it is how it is. I can no more go to sleep with my back to the door than I can climb a rope. (One thing at school I never ever could do. I could see and understand the mechanics but when it came to the practice my progress was zero). Anyway, I either sleep facing the door or on my back ready to spring into action (that’s the theory). I go through phases, I suppose most people do, of having to sleep in one position for periods of time. If I got into bed and tried to go to sleep lying on my back when my head wants to lie on the side then lying on my back just isn’t an option. I could lie on my back for hours and hours, but turn to my side and bang I’m in dreamland. Or the other way around.
Years ago – must be 12+ or more – I had a scaffold piercing in my right ear. It’s the one that has 2 holes connected by one long bar on the back top edge of the ear. It’s never given me any trouble. With that in mind I decided that I wanted some chunkier metal in there and last weekend ordered a 2.4mm * 40mm bar. It arrived yesterday. The top hole in my ear managed to be stretched gently using a taper and the new bar (the original was 1.6mm) was slid through. An increase of .8 seems little….. it’s not. The second hole wasn’t keen on the stretch. It was also at a funny angle for the bar. The taper was fine as it was free at both ends. The new bar also had eternal threading. It was really tricky to get the bar angled right, introduce it to the hole and then gently push.
The cartilage is quite thin there so it bends easily and not always the right way. The skin there also slides around a bit so while the start was around the bar, the end wasn’t being aimed correctly. So my ear was getting a little bit upset as it was. I asked P to check behind my ear and she said she could see some steel in there, so I gently pushed again… I had to give it a little more nudge than I would have preferred but it did go. And it hasn’t been happy since.
I have – and yes I know it’s all my fault – a persistent throbbing pain in my outer ear which is dulled by ibuprofen but not removed. I know it will settle in time. The problem is that I need to sleep too. My body and my head want to sleep facing the door. My ear is letting me know that isn’t such a clever idea. I can’t sleep on my back so I have to strategically place the pillows and my right arm to allow my ear to touch nothing at all as I drift off. Which I do for all of a few minutes before something moves and my ear gives me a big “Remember me?”. Last night I got hardly any sleep. It hurts just as much tonight – if not more actually – so I’m in for more of the same it seems. If I wasn’t in ‘guard the mouth of the cave’ mode I might stand a chance….. maybe caffeine and FFVII could get me through instead.. it is Friday after all…

Pierce and stretch ear lobes? Easy.
Same with ear cart? I’d forgotten just how ouchy this is.

Big Brother – Amanda and Sam

Big Brother … first impressions.
I would have more first impressions if it wasn’t for the squealing idiots who got in there first.
The producers must have thought they struck gold when they went out to find the stereotypical dumb blondes because these two are .. well…. as dumb as you get it seems. Amanda and Sam just squealed and squealed. William Hill already have them as 20/1 to win and that’s the longest current odds. Airheads? There’s no room for air – it’s full of lead.

Is there a single redeeming feature in these girls?
I think not.
Heaven help the other women.

What makes you happy?

I very rarely moderate comments here despite the fact that a couple of threads seem to be running out of control. But there is one that I do watch and which I do remove the obviously not good stuff from. It’s the link in the top right and the reason I watch it is because I think it should be as the latest comment puts it: What a lot of beautiful things on one page.

I also hope that Rachel #118 is okay. A comment that made me think anyway.

Fancy a corgi kebab?

BBC.

A performance artist says he will eat a corgi live on a London radio show in protest at a hunt led by Prince Philip.

That would be so much better if it said live corgi.
I blogged about this nutter some time ago with his water ‘event’. What you need to do though is go to his site – http://www.markmcgowan.org – and check his past events. Bear in mind he is (allegedly) serious, I challenge you to go through every page there while keeping a straight face and oozing empathy for his valiant efforts in the face of society’s inertia.
Or you could laugh and say the words I did – you don’t need me to say, it’ll come naturally :)

It didn’t crash, it wanted the power button fondled.

The mini is slow (again) so I decide to restart.

Damn thinks me, the mac seems to have crashed, but no, this must be a mistake, I must be dreaming, they don’t crash. So I do what it says:

hmm…. I mentally checked I could do without the machine for weeks and weeks should it break. And hit the power off to restart.

It took me seeing that screen 4 times before the mac got enough of a grip to haul itself into action.
And how much trust do I now have in it?
Zero.

Cable burns out and now this happens. As I have said before, if this were a Dell or any generic PC then certain users would be having a pop at me for buying it. But it’s a mac. That must mean it’s not it’s fault. This one is rapidly turning into lemon. A white square californian lemon.

An extra license question.

On the desktop I set the view options to be by size. So I have the main HD (80gb), then a usb stick (512mb) then the other 2 drives of 160gb and 120gb. I assume the FAT32 formatting of the stick is screwing it up because it has lots of free space.

Bought Candybar for the Mac last night. Now I have much nicer icons. I used custom folder colours a lot on XP so I could quickly navigate so it’s a feature I wanted. There’s probably a way to have done it for free but it’s 7 quid so it’s hardly expensive.

Okay, the question.
Some software when it has the condition that you can only use it on 1 machine. It may offer a ‘family’ licence of up to ‘x’ machines. This isn’t talking about volume licensing, just about those programs you find, you like and you buy. Now let’s say you bought a program which you could use on only 1 computer – and then some time later you buy a second computer.
Do you even bother to check any license?
Would you just copy the serial into the new machine?
Would you hunt down the license, check their site and send them an enquiry?
Would you just buy another copy?
Does the cost matter?
If there is a determining factor, what is it?

This isn’t being posted out of guilt or indeed innocence. I usually don’t check. So with some programs I’ll be fine and some I probably won’t – though on the PC I think only FeedDemon was purchased and you could use that across your machines. My thoughts are that I have bought the program for me to use and if I have 2 machines then I need that program to be in 2 locations. They are not being given to anyone else, the serial is not being posted anywhere. The obvious thought is also that I can.
Taking Candybar as an example, I have no idea if I can use that in another machine. I’ve searched Panic’s site but can’t see a EULA. If I couldn’t, would you?

Liberty. Unreasonable.

BBC. Proposals to allow police to stop and question anyone in the UK under new anti-terror laws have been criticised.

…Stopping and questioning anyone you like will backfire because people will be being criminalised.
Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty

Has Ms Chakrabarti or anyone associated with Liberty ever been heard to say “That is perfectly reasonable”. I very much doubt it. And isn’t that just really annoying? Why invite her or her ilk onto things like Question Time? All they ever do is spout forth with Political Correctness in the extreme. So damn predictable. And they aren’t representing me or anyone else. They are representing themselves. They are not trying to ameliorate, they are pushing a squeaky clean agenda that would offend no-one at no time in no circumstance regardless of what action they would or would not take.

“Lock bad people away!”
No, you shouldn’t do that.
“Trust people to be good when you don’t lock them away”
No, you shouldn’t even threaten them with being locked away.
“Ask them questions?”
No, you might upset them.

The Liberty website:

Liberty seeks to protect civil liberties and promote human rights for everyone.

Easy to say when you don’t have to bear the tiniest amount of responsibility or accountability.

Gallery. Clear as mud

Menalto gallery. That’s the piece of software that hasn’t been anywhere near any usability testing whatsoever. It’s amazingly obtuse. There has to be an alternative – someone must have created something that can work and can do so intuitively.
It’s astoundingly bad.

Need a gallery? Avoid Menalto.

MySpace stealing.

Almost 2 years ago I wrote a post called “Fidelity – what is cheating?“. Today it was stolen in it’s entirety for the 3rd time by someone at MySpace. It’s the top post on stats right now and I have not the slightest idea why. But it’s been stolen. I’m used to being splogged and I don’t now bother. But real people taking content? Why should anyone tolerate that? The first person I asked to take my post down apologised and did. They ended up quoting and linking which was cool. The second person immediately made their space private and would not answer IM’s. She did do as I asked though when I copied the complaint that I had sent in. And this one I have also asked. And she’ll get the same. (Complaints going into MySpace get a slower answer than those coming into wordpress.com……. but hey, where doesn’t?). I await her response..

Update:
1.

im not posting it as my own man, it was on a webpage and the internet is a free place. the person who typed it didnt even site their work so it’s free
myspace wont do anything because i sited the wbpage it’s from, ever heard of a hyperlink dude?

Complaint made and I told her. She has other copied content.

2.

u should be honored. Im promoting ur work. im not saying i wrote it

I told her she is stealing content.

3.

Ok your crazy. Go away

4.

I’m not stealing content, I have sited everything. That is legal. It is not plagarism if it’s sited. Don’t you have english courses in the UK

I asked again. I did explain how she would feel if people copied her stuff. I did explain what the complaint might do.

5.

Go fuck yourself

and she set her blog to Private.

Update: 29 May. The post of mine has been removed. They do take their time over there but I still won :)
