Spam

Will rise here probably as part of a little experiment I’ve volunteered for so I fully expect some gratuitous ads to creep in where before there were none. But hey, it’s only spam. “Sticks and stones..” My Delete finger will be well exercised.

Saw a reference to Orkut earlier and wandered over. Now they really do need to get a grip – loads of spam links, loads of warez links, communities swamped with spam. I created the Ferrets community a long time ago and I didn’t realise that creators could now delete spam and ban the spammers. So some idiot called Marco is now duly banned. Not that such an action breathes life into it – Orkut looks very dusty indeed. Found a great profile quote – “about me: I’m a fucking Princess” but maybe that site served it’s purpose in grabbing all the personal information they wanted.

24 hours and I’ll be on a plane. It still seems surreal. And I feel really guilty that J and the girls aren’t coming along. A consequence of how we decided we would raise them coupled with life events has meant that we always do things as a family. If we go, they come along too. And yet I’m going and they are not. Which is okay by them and also by me but it feels very odd. As they get even older – D has already been away with a friend for a week and she went away last year too – then it’s going to happen that they leave us but this is me leaving them to go to somewhere new. That probably makes absolutely no sense.

Tomorrow support will be a bit slower with the times at airports being when I can get email – so long as I can find a plug. So there will be two bursts of activity rather than a continual presence. Hopefully no-one will mind too much…

Beta3. Third time. No joy.

The laptop had a good sort today. Loads deleted, defragged, scanned – the whole lot. Works as well as it can. Reading a few feedbacks about IE7 I thought I’d give it a whirl. I’d tried it when it first hit beta and it didn’t work. This time it still does not work. I can install in Safe Mode, with the AV on or off and all I get when I click the icon is a brief flash before it dies. Even the system logs give me no clue.
Scanning the ‘official’ newsgroups I see repeated scenarios with many others – and not one consistent solution. They talk about safe mode, about AV, about re-downloading dll’s, removing flash and shockwave, removing Google toolbars, Yahoo toolbars and other strangeness – it’s a beta3 – it should be about ready. It should ‘just work’.

Been playing with K-Meleon the past few days. Very nice. Very fast. Makes me wonder how much I might have slowed Firefox down with the extensions I use – which aren’t that many, only 21 – but there’s fast and then there is ‘fast enough and as functional as I want’. Firefox fits the latter.

A police helicopter has been circling around the motorway junction a few times as I’m writing this. No doubt it’s car thieves again – it’s damn noisy! How do people not know there is a helicopter about? They make a hell of a racket.

ski-ba-bop-ba-dop-bop

Found a copy of Scatman’s World earlier and even though it’s 11 years old it’s still damn good stuff. It’s 00:43, I’ve heard it several times today and right now the others are in bed and I’m sitting here with it fairly booming out. Stay-awake bouncy music :)

Current Zen playlists: Fatboy Slim (several), Moloko, Massive Attack, Tiesto Concerts (3), Bond (3), CunninLynguists, Moby, Rez, Scatman, Scooter (2), UB40, Trance 2006, Bez’s Madchester, Classic Trance tracks. 301 tracks. More….. maybe I need some. ZZTop possibly….

And apart from charging the PSP I think I’m all prepared.

It should not be blue.

For years the inhaler you take when you have an asthma attack has been blue. Short of breath? Find the blue one. Off out? Grab the blue one. The preventers were light brown, dark brown, green, orange, white, red – but never ever blue. Until now. Glaxo Wellcome – hardly a small company – has produced a blue preventer. It’s got a big breen sticker on it that says to not use use it as a “reliever” but it’s still blue. How screwed up is this? I’m not the only one that ‘sees’ blue and reaches for it. Blue stands out. Blue is important. I went out with Winston the other day. It was really hot, the air was still and my breathing got worse. I needed the inhaler – and I find myself with a useless medication.
Glaxo have no excuse whatsoever for such a monumental f*ckup. Not one.

But your mind is….

Generally a horrible day but with bright spots.
+ realising that some people are just plain nasty
+ getting a £10 redemption from Amazon
+ sorting out packing (though electrics have yet to be done)
+ throwing my mind back to the ‘Root’ days…..
+ printing out the tickets for the journey
+ I found and reported a feed problem for Feeddemon
- feeling really ill due to the hot weather
That one minus shouldn’t really outweigh the positives but I have felt supremely crap. Salt imbalance. I should have bought some bananas…..

Lightning last night caused problems so I had to reboot the router. That is not a problem – but it could seem to be next week. I need to train the girls.

Just do it dammit

Lifehacker. A post called “Back on the GTD wagon: Do a mind sweep“. Nothing that wrong with the post itself, but they have what I assume is a quote from the book being plugged / reviewed:

Ubiquitous capture is a process that means staying mindful, always having the collection tools you need nearby, and then using them. No, it doesn’t have to be a Hipster PDA it could be a Treo, a whiteboard, or the side of your freshly shorn cat. The point is, capture the first time you think of it and you can rededicate that mental processing cycle to more interesting creative work.

Now pardon my language here… but that is a steaming pile of crap. It’s complete bollocks. It’s using lots of big language to say “Make a note” and they’ll charge you the book, a course and a personal mental trainer no doubt just so you can ‘make a note’. FFS. Who is the idiot here? Them for writing this trash or someone for saying “OMG! I so need this book!”. C’mon – this is …. garbage. When will people get a frigging grip? You don’t Get Things Done by giving these people money – or even finding pdf torrents – you get it done by doing it. We all have lazy days, we all have days when we can’t be arsed but we all know what we need to do.
“Ubiquitous capture” – piss off.

Scratchings

Can I claim my internet connection as a business expense? I suppose I can because it’s essential but … dunno. One for later maybe.

I finally got all the digital photos on one directory and some software to help catalogue it. 2.5gb of images. I know that’s nothing compared to some but hey, it’s going to take me some time…

The company Aquasoothe ? “A Name You Cannot Trust” said they would pick up the part of J’s scooter today so they could get it back sooner. They lied. It’s still in the garage. That’s nice eh?

I didn’t blog about the screens I got. Bought from ebuyer.com as have a few things recently. Excellent people. No small print, clear information and they have never been late. The screens were a day early. I like ebuyer.

And today for the first time in a long time I wanted to leave this machine off. I need a lot of sleep. Maybe I should cut out the caffeine :)

Google Video: The Power of Nightmares. Scary. (src: Reddit – though I blogged about it when it was on TV I think. I probably used the word ‘Very’ in front of the ‘scary’. Adding the ‘F’ word in there would not be an overstatement.)

I’m on a big Fatboy Slim kick atm. Interspersed with some Bond. Zen will be loaded with all for the trip. It’s weird that I have all my tickets and they all come out of the printer here….cue a “When I were a lad” moment… but it’s not. It’s just a comparison with holiday flights.

My microsoft mouse. Every morning I have to reset it to being fast (I have it one notch down from top). I have no idea why. Batteries are good. Maybe it too needs time to wake.

National Muppet Service

There are some very orange pictures of the UK from space which apparently is to show just how hot we are. First , I believe them without pictures. Second, as there is no image of what is normal for this time of year those images are useless. Third, as usual it’s a political motivation behind it.

P needs a scan and an appointment with a surgeon. They were given explicit dates for when we are available. When is her scan appt? In the middle of our holiday. Every day the NHS gets another muppet on the staff.

This is different from J who has now just about lost vision in her left eye. She cannot get an appointment at all. They are refusing to find her any space. That’ll be the another bloody muppet then.

What catastrophic event would it take for the NHS to actually go back to being the NHS? Right now it’s a “If we feel like it and you are cheap and you will never come back health (if you don’t count the free MRSA with every stay) service”. They’ve has pretty much every event from keeping the bodies of the dead through to embezzlement yet Trusts are still the way to go. This is no NHS.
Private clinics only make some people richer. The Tories said Trusts must always run with an annual profit of 6%. Yeah right .. but then we all know this.

Tin lid time. J has been using her electric scooter more. She is still deeply not liking it but she’s seen how it works – because the girls have zoomed around in it – and she has started using it late at night when it’s slightly darker, less people are around so she is less self-conscious. With the girls or me we go to the bridge near us which is easy to reach for her and she gets to see Winston out and about. It’s a nice thing. It stopped working the other night. Batteries were good it just would not work.
Next day she rings the company ‘Aquasoothe’ I think they are. This scooter cost around £1500 in February. It’s sole purpose is to move a disabled person about. And yet they gave J the third degree – where had she been, how had she used it, had she dropped the batteries, had she dismantled the scooter, had it been left outside, had it been misused, could she first try x, y and z and even more. I was listening to the conversation and it sounded like the company were trying to get out of doing a damn thing. In the end they said they would send a box, we put the front part (the mechanical bit) into the box, it will be picked up and they’ll look at it. Box arrives this morning. Half the internal packaging they state is essential and they will not be liable for any damage caused by us not packing it correctly is not there. We ring them. They say it is there. What? In the end they concede. And when will it be back? When it’s mended. When will that be? Err……. we are quite busy right now…. ….. the second part of their name seems inappropriate.
