Need feeds

If I were still a nurse there would be a fair few feeds I could read to do with what I did. And they’d be interesting and necessary at times – esp with the recent Mental Health Act situation. But with not working in the traditional sense (yet also not counting in any figures) there is no single focus. Despite any impression I may otherwise give I read a lot of news (and from around the globe too) and only have ~30 blogs in among around 170 normal feeds. But they get very repetitive – if CNN have it and the BBC has it then everyone does. The feeds of the Press overlap with the only amusement being the spin that the Telegraph/Times and the Guardian put on precisely the same event. So there is no single thread or topic I can home in on. Neither me or J follow anything to do with MS – if something good is to happen it will without us watching something and if it doesn’t … it will have been time wasted – and bipolar info is garbage so from our ‘life’ as such there isn’t something I can grab. So I’m looking for feeds. That post below I said I’d got 207 feeds? Above it said 170? It’s now 102. Not enough. Need more.

FeedDemon 2.0

After a decently long beta period, FD just went 2.0. A completely clean install along with a few imported FD feeds shows 207 feeds and 4212 items unread. Pah… I’ll mark that lot read soon enough. It’s still the best $30 I’ve spent on software though (it comes now from the same stable as NetNewsWire which for the Mac is meant to be pretty damn good) so if you are on Windows and want feeds, get FD. This sounds like an advert … but hey, it’s great software and I spend far too much time on here having a pop at products so it’s nice to be able to wave the flag for one. $30 over a year is about 8c/day which is around 5p. Can’t get much better than that :)

The Times and Bombs

Look at this part of the Times Online

Why, some 8 months after the event, are the London bombings given such a high profile link in their sidebar? I cannot believe that the link has been overlooked for this length of time. Clicking through to the page there is a whole swathe of information collected and seemingly presented as some sort of “First the bombs now all this” when maybe the links are weaker, possibly even not there at all. It’s like some sort of “We shall never forget” or a page that they keep “ready for the next time”. I know it was significant but that much? Makes me wonder what sort of internet coverage would have been given for the IRA during their mainland campaigns, or the Lockerbie disaster or other events that had a significant impact – or an impact judged as worthy by the press.

Swings and Roundabouts

J keeps apologising and saying she feels guilty that we are doing stuff and she can’t. The horribleness of MS aside, it’s actually just swings and roundabouts. There have been days in years past when I’ve not done my bit and she took up the slack. There are tasks which she still does (like all the money) and jobs she can do which I cannot (like being a mum) so she doesn’t have anything to apologise for – but she’ll keep doing it. I doubt there is any long-term relationship where things are even on a short-term basis. Maybe even long-term – and J and me have been together since 1983 and this September it’s our Emerald wedding anniversary (20 years) (and holy hell that makes me feel old!) – it doesn’t balance out but who counts? It’s not that “Thank You” becomes redundant but just right now she doesn’t need to say it. But then what would she say ? Phrases like “You call that tidying up?” or “Don’t mix the whites and the coloureds” could be used but I’m well trained by now :) I’d say it’s strange how things are but then that’s true. But that isn’t unique to us – apart from TV and the adverts for family holidays I have no real idea about the dynamic of other relationships. I can guess – like you can – and the big stuff will all be the same but those little idiosyncrasies are what make or break relationships, never the big stuff. Very hard things to describe are relationships.

Scuttle up

Scuttle is now at 0.7.1 – a fact I discovered after adding a link to my own install and discovering some wonderful new links had been added by some spamming b*stards. Not the fault of Scuttle – far from it – I had foolishly left the register.php file in the directory. phpmyadmin showed I’d gained 4 friends keen to share their own web discoveries with me but alas their logins will no longer be working….. the config file hasn’t changed by more than one line so it’s an easy enough upgrade.

IP question.

You know when a comment is submitted in WP that a whois link is supplied for the IP? I’ve a question about that.
I don’t normally click them but a comment in the last few hours raised my eyebrows a touch so I clicked it: http://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl?queryinput=198.54.202.18. The commenter left no url, just a gmail address. The other bit of info from WP was cbs-cache1-vif1.saix.net. I’m not sure if this is a legit comment or a spammer trying to get me to leave the doors open. The post concerned is the one titled “Advanced Cell Therapeutics”.
