Syncing

In a post below, I asked for any suggestions for a Personal Information Manager (none so far forthcoming). What I’m after is something that can live online or on my machine – I do NOT want anything to do with services such as BackPack and the other online ‘Web2.0′ apps. It’s not that they are bad necessarily – all I’ve heard is good things about anything from 37signals – it’s that I want total control over my data and I do not want to become beholden to anyone if I wish to access that data. We are all in need of an ISP to connect, but beyond that, why tie up your information with a company and an interface that could change overnight ? If you work with remote teams I suppose it might make sense but for me it makes none. It may be the ‘cool thing to do’ but I’m always behind the times in anything ‘cool’ and this time I don’t think I’m missing a party. Nick Bradbury (author of FeedDemon which I bought) is among many who seem to be standing back a wee bit from this push to putting everything online, emphasising that there is life and purpose in the desktop yet. I want an online PIM for sync / backup purposes. I’m actually starting to accumulate data that is important (not for me, for others) and while I have online storage that I use, I’d quite like something to help me keep track and remind me too. While just one solution would work, it provides no backup function. This machine stops – others get annoyed at me. This machine stops and I have not only backups but the notes and associated info – others would know nothing. That’s my objective. Unfortunately, so far it seems a wiki is it and that has to be manually synced, has no reminders …

SSX on Tour

A few hours of play later ….
A very different beast to SSX3 and more closely related to Tricky for me. I’m well into Semi-Pro and it’s starting to get challenging. Courses are tight to the point that falling offline is punished very harshly, there are many many shortcuts – and I’m sure a couple of ‘longcuts’ and tricking .. is pretty damn difficult. I think I’ve got the top combo board – by the time I thought a new board might be useful I’d accumulated ~$180,000 so I just got the best one. As you do :) I’m wondering about longevity though … with SSX3 you could use the characters, with Tricky you’d go to unlock new boards, new uber-tricks … but with the auto-save (I HATE autosave on anything – I will decide thankyouverymuch and I’ll live with any consequences too) I’m not sure what I can do once I’ve got whoever it is I’m playing as to be the Black Diamond.
Anyway, more on the game. The camera zooms in well enough when going through tight spaces but doesn’t then zoom back out fast enough. That’s lead to a few wipeouts. The ‘get so far ahead of your opponent’ races are fantastic. The ‘get more trick points’ are difficult – maybe I should buy some Monsters ? – and I miss the many many challenges that were present in SSX3. There’s a cartoon guy on the left of the screen which displays the objectives – looks like the drummer from Slade (to me anyway). Motorhead on the soundtrack – good move. Autosave – it checks the memcard 3 times before you can play a previous game. Long wait …
Still – I’ve played it loads, it makes my thumbs sweat and I both swear and grin. Love it :)

Stealing

Wandered up to the corner shop we used to frequent when we lived in the village previously. No real changes – static village life for you – but he’s lost his young assistant. I asked where the lad had gone and I was told ‘Don’t know’. So I said it again – this lad had worked there for ages. Turns out that they’d finally got around to checking stock and then setup their security cameras. The camera’s caught nothing, but the stock was almost certainly going. So they confronted him – they asked if he was stealing their stock. He denied it. He said he was not several times apparently – and then walked out and stayed away from the shop. Hasn’t been seen since. No complaints from anyone about what they did – so therefore yes, he was indeed guilty of stealing from them. Not good.

Akismet

is running here. I have – at this time – deactivated the superb SK2 to give Akismet a fair crack. Reading a couple of posts a few hours ago, at http://boakes.org the mention is made of the spammers hammering the server(s) that the Akismet lives on in an effort to kill it – or at least stun it. I have no idea if this is a real possibility, but given that Poker company shares are still rising and the card game/chips etc are still being bought in the shops this is a huge business. Would the hammering just move overseas ? I don’t know. What I would like though is for something to monitor the state of the Akismet server and at the first sign of trouble / delay / non-ping / whatever to then switch SK2 back in. Thinking about it, I cannot recall any plugin being able to switch another plugin on/off – why ? Can it not be done ? It would be amazing if that could happen – a 3-tiered defence.

And I finally got SSX on Tour. “I Rule!” :)

Dreams

Every night when P. goes to bed, I have to go up and tell her what she has to dream about. We nearly always start though with the getting comfortable, slower breathing and various relaxation techniques and then I describe the pictures she should see and the dreams. Tonight she’s a bubble on some coral watching all the fish.. and one night doing those relaxation techniques is going to send me off to sleep there and then too. Watching your kids asleep is very special.
