  1. Being the daughter of a sailor-man, I grew up around a lot of those. But many went completely over my head. He used to grin this big conspiratorial grin when I said my “good morning” by asking “How’s it hanging?”. I thought that “it” was the flags on the mast of a ship. You know… like asking what the weather was. He would answer “Straight and true”, which just served to verify what I thought. I was 14 when I suddenly realized just “what” I had been asking about. When he saw the look on my face, he laughed so hard, he cried. Of course, my mother had words with us both about the whole thing. But now, I can laugh as well.
