Forgot to mention..

I’m playing with Vanilla. Cinch to install, and I like the default CSS for the most part – I’ll get round to changing some of the lighter greys. Not a whole lot there right now, and joining gets instant access so do go play and tell me what could be better :) My forums – and if you do, write something in the story ! Or start another !

Sokoban in a green tunic

Inspired by both Etanisla’s post and by a huge reorganisation of my ROM collection, I fired up Zelda (Minish Cap) a few days ago. “I’ll just do this room” … “I know where that chest is !” … “Now where was…” and all manner of similar sayings have been escaping from me since. I’ve done no css stuff I wanted to at all, and other matters have fallen by the wayside, including housework – not good. But they are such great games ! And the emulation aspect cannot be faulted either. I must remember to back it all up ….

Parochial stones

Peculiar example of journalism:

which is from our local paper. Would it have been less cruel to have said “Abandoned cat left in a perfectly sized box” ? or “Abandoned cat left in huge box – feels lost as well as unloved” ?

And if I could be anywhere this afternoon, this would be top of my list: World Stone Skimming Championships. I loved doing that as a kid… shooting pebbles into the North Sea from Whitley Bay. Memories..

Liam Fox talks utter crap.

A short article in the Independent has this as the headline: Fox: Mental patients’ treatment a disgrace and Liam Fox (who just happens to want to lead the Bunch of Blue) claims that the mentally ill are getting poor treatment. What the fuck does this guy know ?

  • Who gave us the 1983 Mental Health Act ? The Conservatives
  • Who gave us the Community Care Act ? The Conservatives
  • Who closed the hospitals and replaced them with nothing ? The Conservatives
  • Who created a hospital system centred around profit which excludes the mentally ill virtually by default ? The Conservatives.

The pathetic Mr Fox ought to realise that taken overall the Labour party have done more for the care of the mentally ill and have done so from as far back as Enoch Powell and Barbara Castle. But go look at that article again – and check the last sentence: “sleeping in the doorways of some of our most beautiful buildings… then we are witnessing a policy failure that a humane society should not tolerate” It’s the aesthetics of the buildings that bothers him isn’t it ? He doesn’t give a flying one for the people, just the architecture.

An amusing article about language differences in The Times: A right pair of slampadati.

http://spaceshipradio.com (src: BoingBoing) reminds me that there is a book of Ray Bradbury’s I would like.. short stories I think. I can recall two of the stories vaguely – one involving a floating walkway and a crushed butterfly, the other the chase and then the weighing of the victim…

This US Representative blamed the Tsunami on the behaviour of the people it affected. He lives in Texas. Go figure that one. (src: BME)

What’s wrong with this image (from a BBC News search for “bird flu”)

It’s the word “may“. Could I take a wild guess that I think whoever said that has been sat in a cupboard for several months ? May ? Try “will cripple” or “will swamp beyond belief”. Good grief, they can’t even cope with normal flu let alone one that will kill tens of thousands.

And on Bird Flu, Switzerland are testing migratory birds. Wonder what’s happening here … Though the economics are shining through already. Malaysia wants to be declared flu-free because of trade no doubt. I have no idea about the intricacies of trade in that region, but when I read that I automatically thought of British beef, the french and illegality. But that won’t happen again, will it ?

And I was fixing someone’s site yesterday. I had to download their index.php – and in doing so I accidentally overwrote my new layout index.php. All in one file it was… the css, the php, the lot. Not clever. Bah.

Download files

In response to a few emails and a comment, here is everything.

http://www.zen77857.zen.co.uk/zips/odt-files.zip – these are the Open Office files. It’s a 4.5meg download. If you open these files in Notepad, all you will see is garbage. I have no idea if MS Word can use them (Word is not installed on this machine).

http://www.zen77857.zen.co.uk/zips/PDF.zip – all of them in one big 29meg folder.

http://www.zen77857.zen.co.uk/docs – open directory.

Note: Some of these files are perfect copies of what is still in Codex. Other files will not be as complete. I am not currently planning on updating them, so I am providing these as a resource to you if you wish to take over the project, and as a download for people who don’t mind that what they read might be slightly out of date.

I’m not sure if I have to say this, but I will. GPL. There. That’s all the legal complexities taken care of. Go publish.

BBC News

On the BBC News page, there are – among others – 4 links on the left: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales. Clicking England or Wales will result in another screen that has a dropdown menu that further localises the news. Northern Ireland and Scotland do not have this dropdown – yet Scotland is much larger than Wales. I wonder why.
