OpenCD

I meant to post this in the last entry. I have an .iso of the OpenCD 3 which I torrented
so if anyone who has commented here before wants a copy (because you are on dialup) then either leave me a comment here and I’ll email you for your address or drop me an email with that info and I’ll burn a copy for you. (Note: Only commenters before the time of this entry are ‘eligible’ otherwise I could be burning CD’s forever.). If you want to see what’s on the shiny CD of OSS goodness, then go find out !

Late on a Sunday

I’ve given up with Typo. I now know that the problem is lying somewhere in redirects and I had a good play around with those while reading the error logs. I don’t think I’ve quite got my head around just what it’s meant to look like on the server – and this is all my fault (if it’s a fault exactly). There are some superb tutorials around for Rails but I think I’m just coming at it from the wrong angle. Because I’ve fiddled here and there I might also be compounding errors. The other issue is that if I’m finding installation difficult then I have no clue what the other side will be like and while I’m confident in my skills to an extent I don’t want to add to frustration. So I’ve deleted it all and it’ll stay away for a few days. Heh, maybe I should pay someone to do it for me :)
MT installation was a breeze, and it now resides in a subdomain. xhtml trans valid out of the box (nice) and once 3.2 is released I’ll start using it – probably as a more personal blog but not the ‘as dark as it gets’ stuff.

And no, I’m not abandoning WP. I have numerous wp blogs, the MT one, a Xanga blog, a Blogger blog, soon a TXP blog…..

On a Sunday

Colossal headache plus a cyclical downswing makes for zero concentration and understanding. Ruby on Rails is now up, linked and active here – just need to figure out where to put the typo directory (and the svn link at leetsoft just will not work for me. Annoying. I’ve been at this too long so I’m taking a break from even trying now – I can’t think straight enough for it. As an easier task though, I’m uploading the latest Movable Type beta and I’ll install that later too. Apparently it’s significantly different to previous versions and you can’t knock what you don’t know can you ? You know where you stand with a company like Six Apart too – that has to be a good thing.

Random stuff

Spent a while last night trying to find a domain name to buy. Every single one had gone, which is no great surprise I guess, and if I wanted to start using numbers instead of letters I could get something close, but that’s cheating so I won’t. And anyway, if I want to write on a domain of mine, a quick hop to dnsstuff would tell someone everything they could want to know about it (yep, even the hosting company, which server and how many other sites are on the server so you can’t even pretend you have cool hosting when you are really on one of the junk hosts) so anonymity is blown. So screw buying another. I’m going back there.

Typo. Did it over again and I think that it’s because the Alias is not setup – and as I couldn’t see a way of doing this through cpanel, and because I didn’t try the .htaccess at domain level I subbed a ticket to ASO late last night. So now I have the reply and just need to give a couple of bits of info but then Gary has emailed me an XP setup guide (cheers !) which I’ll get round to tackling later so I get to see the inside of the ‘new kid on the blogging block’.

House builders – here’s an idea! The suppliers of your concrete lintels for windows ? get them to set holes at a fixed size and depth in two rows parallel to one edge. Then us – the people who have to put blinds / curtain rails and other materials as deemed by the females in the house – have somewhere easy and predictable to slap some rawlplugs into. Battering away with a screaming hammer drill is not – oddly enough – anywhere close to my ‘leisure interests’ list.

Is a comment beginning “Hi everybody” and which then turns out to someone promoting their anti-spam methods in fact spam itself ? I think so. Anyone who has a clue knows that SK2 and BB are all you need.

Playing and failing

Typo is – probably correctly given it’s current state – one for the geeks and they are keeping it that way. I don’t mean that to sound harsh, but when it takes digging around multiple webpages just to get bits of code then either (1) I’m dense (2) my learning curve is steep here or (3) the code is written by people who are assuming a huge amount about their audience. And it’s probably all 3. Not that there is anything wrong with (3) at all – it’s a necessary stage that all code must go to, and hopefully come through if it is ever to make the leap to more mainstream. I can’t see typo doing that just yet though – though I do find it very strange indeed that I could not dig out a single page with a 1-2-3 of installation on it. It took me about two hours just to get to the ‘could not be reached’ message – and every time I tried and failed it took the server offline. So I think I ought to stop for now – and get back to chopping this admin into the shape it was before the last upgrade.

It’s frustrating waiting

Not in a bad way, just in a “I wanna, I wanna play” sort of fashion. Two emails I need, then I can go play with Typo. I debated setting it up here .. may yet do that .. just to play with.

Firewalls. Symantec – that well-known producer of bloat disguised in yellow boxes with ‘Norton’ on the sides- has bought Sygate which is a damn shame as Sygate produce a nifty FREE firewall. It may not be as fully featured as your $$$ alternatives, but it works, it doesn’t screw around with your machine and it’s rules are actually easy to understand. Go download a copy. Keep it safe. Once it’s been “Norton’d” it will be decidely crap.

This is cool: Anonymous Message and URL Server

BritPulse – a forum for Brits. It’s cool too – and I’ve got an avatar in the forum :)

And in other news, the dog has been out for his first walks.
Technically, he should have waited (okay … WE) until next Monday but what the hell – there aren’t many beasts around here. The girls took him for such a long walk the first day he fell asleep when they got to the park. So yesterday and today, unless he’s been out he’s been shattered and sleeping. Dogs asleep ? Well if they are going to be breathing, then asleep is the next best state for me.

Smooth filtering

Made a comment over at Gary’s blog last night. Couple of weeks ago he switched from TXP to Typo (or is it typo ?) and this was the first comment I’d left since. Very very nice indeed. Make comment, click Submit and then the comment just slides into view. No page refresh, it just glides onto the screen. I made two followup comments just to see it happen again :) And thinking about it this morning, although I know it’s AJAX, if things are that smooth for me when I’m just dropping a comment, I want to see how slick it just has to be on the admin side. I mean – it can hardly have a clunky interface can it ? So I’m going to install it. And if it’s as good as I’m reading I might even use it. First thing is a test install but you know I said recently about running two blogs – one being private ? I might use it for that, but not on either of my tamba2 domains. I have ideas but I’m waiting on news too. But I WILL run typo somewhere – I need something now to do.

And filtering … isn’t it just the best ? Two places I frequent I have finally got completely fed up with detritus to the point that I’ve had to filter just to make my world that wee bit more pleasant. Wildcards rule !
