Moving the roots

The week of the move commences at last.
We’ve got the “man and van” for Thursday, but we get the keys Wednesday and we don’t have to be gone from here until Saturday morning. So we have some logistics worked out but in the end it’ll come down to just getting it there and sorting it out over time. Houses never become homes overnight do they ? The trickiest part is getting the bond back for this place – we really cannot afford to lose the £500 but the landlady isn’t around to do the “inspection” until Saturday morning (more of which later). We are her first tenants too so we aren’t sure of her expectations. J has though made herself fully aware of what the law and the contract says. We get cash back, we will be happy. If we do not get it back, all of it, then I will take revenge. Planned it is. Legal ? Actually, it probably is that too !
I’m hoping that J does not wear herself out in all of this because we pay a hard price for much longer afterwards if she does do too much, but then I can’t stop her and if I try to she get’s annoyed at me and frustrated at herself. Bah.
The other significance, albeit just for a few miles is that the girls will be moving from the village they have lived in since they were born. Where we are going literally is only 2 villages away and they have lots of friends there but it’ll still be odd – maybe not for them as all things will be new but for us. We were both moved around a lot when we were kids (going to new schools is evil) and we decided very early on in our marriage that any kids would have solid roots regardless of careers (and as it has turned out other events) and it’s no small matter of pride to us both that our girls really do have friends they have known since their first days at playschool. Roots are important .. lives shouldn’t be fractured in childhood.
So although it’s just a move – and they happen by the 1000 every day – this one has it’s significances and problems. Which is why I’m pondering the WP London meetup. There are reasons to go, and reasons to not …..

It’s TV Turn-Off Week !

They want us to live without the TV and to be honest I could do so very very easily – but do not come between me and my computer okay ?
There’s a bit on that page that says this “Why is the FCC spending your money to get you to buy a new TV set? ” which reminds me of that scene in Dave (wasn’t Sigourney just gorgeous in that ?) where the eponymous lead questions why the Govt is spending tax dollars to encourage the citizens to buy US products when that industry spent less doing that. I wonder what the UK spends money on us in the same way ?
You know, with the election where it is, this TV thing isn’t such a bad idea !

Google screws

A while ago I requested that Google removed me from their database (due to my trying to reduce my bandwidth) which they did. It was around that time that a blogspot blogger hotlinked to my page and stole bandwidth, and as a consequence of that I ran with this header Google: You create, We steal. I flagged this header to the big G (I was pissed at them). Not long after all this, I re-added my URL from within Google (I did this several times in fact). I also started looking at logs. Sure enough, Googlebot starts paying visits and crawling all over my site and in an email conversation yesterday I learned that my linking to another blog’s post has had a dramatic positive effect on that very post. Hmm….. in case you are interested, I had a PR of 7 before all of this with my requested removal resulting in a PR-. So… the PR rankings get changed and given the cycle of things and my requests to be added / removed I was interested in where I might figure.
I don’t.
I can search on Google and my url does not directly figure in ANY results. Okay.. I asked to be removed from their database so maybe I can’t argue but what I CAN argue with is that if they are crawling my site and NOT returning me in any results then they have added me but have made a decision not to show me. And so if they are not going to show me, then why crawl my site and cost me bandwidth again ? What is their point ?

I don’t care for the PageRank – I have nothing to sell. What I do care about is that a private company is taking (yes, taking) all this information yet we have zero control over it. Seen their new stuff about Videos ? says that you “can upload for free!” – and that they will later sell them. Probably with ad breaks.

Either way Googlebot is banned, and I shall be watching the logs to see if it disobeys.
