So what else happened today ?

Had a fantastic 2½ hour session at the gym where I rowed further than I had in one session, lifted more and x-trained longer and harder. I even weighed myself – despite weight not being an issue – and found that after the initial loss, I’m putting it back on slightly which is pretty cool. No gym tomorrow but then the weekend I aim to start the bikes on Race setting and increase the row by at least 1000m. (They do an RPM Bike session and I’ve seen the state of some people when they get off their bikes so I need to prepare for such an ordeal !).

And tomorrow it’s April 1.
Absolutely bloody wonderful.
I hope.

Smoke, fire and css

Noisy in the WP world today …. and I learn yet again that the person speaking the message determines whether or not the message is even read, let alone assimilated. Pfftt – I really should know by now.

Anyway ….. assuming no interruptions, this css has had it’s day. The time for a new style has arrived. Coding the css will be live – I absolutely totally utterly guarantee it will be a mess.
======
Basics work in FF / Opera / Netscape. An image problem in IE (sur-bloody-prise !).
Back to fiddling.
======
Miniblog added, image in IE sorted, text size now uniform across browsers.
Todo: overflows. Image for header. Colours !

Anything broken your side ?
======
That’ll do for now. Some settling in needed.

Give me a reference ?

I’m asking a favour :)

For a variety of reasons, it is going to be useful to me to have some references from people I have “worked for” (so to speak). What I do not mean is WP help in the forums necessarily, but if I have helped you in any 1:1 way, and particularly if I have had access to your server, then a reference would be very handy indeed.
So (he says in a slightly embarrassed manner), if you could email something – to tamba2 at gmail dot com – I would very much appreciate it.

Windows Shells

Apart from LiteStep (the description and link to which is found over at thebombsite) any others of note worth considering ?
(Note: I said ‘shells’ not ‘alternate OS to Windows’ :) )

Update: Screw LiteStep. 3 installs. 3 crashes, one of which even stopped a Restart, winamp controls that cannot be removed and 10 themes downloaded all of which failed to install. And this is a stable release ?. Wow… I’ll be the one not going near cvs then.

Return of the labret

Working at abody today, and seeing as my labret had been bereft of metal for over a month, I asked Brian to take a look. I’d removed it due to the flat back of the stud continually embedding into my lip, to the point that it was painful to extricate. I had tried various things – removing the bar for short times, massaging the inside of my lip, wearing a ring but nothing had worked.

Noticed on Irregular Times

(Lansing, Michigan) Doctors or other health care providers could not be disciplined or sued if they refuse to treat gay patients under legislation passed Wednesday by the Michigan House. The bill allows health care workers to refuse service to anyone on moral, ethical or religious grounds. (Dailykos).

Relativity

Being 6’2″ (1.88m) tall, it’s usually the case that I can survey the horizon regardless of the surroundings. Crowds hold no fears for me – I spy my target and plough straight for it, with the facial metal assisting in people getting out of my way. Back to height. Nipped in one of the local shops, and it’s a long, quite narrow shop. I grabbed what was needed, nipping around people and things in the way and headed for the last aisle to queue. As I went round that last corner, the light quite literally dimmed, and looking directly ahead I could see a guy – part of him. My eyes were on a level with the middle of this guy’s back. Looking directly ahead my eyes did not reach his shoulder blades. He was HUGE, and all of a sudden I felt very very small. It felt very odd indeed as it’s a situation I am in so very rarely.
I mentioned this as today when leaving the showers at the gym, there were two huge guys getting changed and again it made me feel odd. Not bad, not intimidated exactly … would it sound daft to say it made like I was the child ? That probably does sound odd but it’s difficult to explain. I imagine we all have our perceptions of self changed my external events, and this tallness business gets me every time.

More on Google

Remember a few days ago I had a pop at Google because they were permitting someone to steal my content ? ( Google steals ) and I then followed that up by banning Google from all areas of my site except the WordPress help area ( Removing Google ), well, I read (through Feeddemon) an article on Joi Ito’s blog which also mentions Google. The NYTimes is reporting on the increasing amount of lawsuits which face the big G, with the article focusing on ad revenue.
It IS good that companies are starting to realise that Google (and the others) are blindly taking whatever their bots get their hands on and they are then not caring what they do with what is in effect not even their property. Let’s say you take a picture, add a © to it (not that you need to do that) and put it on your site. If I come along, copy it and place it on my site you can action against me. Yet Google, by it’s very nature gives me access to more pictures and more choice, regardless of the legal status of an image. Go read the Google procedure on what to do if someone steals your content and sticks it on blogger – it is convoluted and designed purely to protect them from the inevitable furore.
I probably sound like I’m whinging, but unless companies hammer through some form of protection, it’s bloggers like us ( and those with some ISP space for a gallery) who will find our images and our work in places we never meant it to be. Most people reading this will be savvy enough about the net, but do people new to this really understand that google can and will copy that image of the family around the world when all they wanted to do was show a distant relative ? Aren’t the search engines at some level guilty of at least not being straight ?
And you just know that Google will decide that some existing tag will be used to demarcate intellectual property don’t you ? They won’t help at all. And yes, I am perfectly aware of the new Yahoo engine – http://search.yahoo.com/cc – and as a source of guilt / lawsuit / full copyright free work it’s unreliable.
